Why am sad Dolphy is gone?

July 11, 2012

I am an 80s kid. I was born and raised in the 80s.And my childhood reminds me a lot of Dolphy’s movies that my mom would take me to local cinemas in downtown Legazpi City just to watch his movies.

The one that absolutely had great impact to me was his 1987 movie “Once Upon a Time”. I was 7 years old that time but the plot of that story really remained in my mind up to now. The whole cast of the movie is a blockbuster during that time – with the loveteam of Snooky-Richard, Janice de Belen (my all-tuime favourite Filipina actress and my childhood crush), the very regal Lani Mercado with the very versatile Gloria Romero playing as the villain, and of course, entwined with the great comedy antics of Chichay and Tessie Tomas, plus the That’s Entertainment stars Mon Alvir,Anjo Yllana & Chuckie Dreyfuss.

Once Upon A Time,a 1987 hit comedy-fantasy flick which starred “Dolphy”.

As a kid, the plot of that movie really remained in my mind.

I grew up as a teenager just right in time in 1993 when ABS-CBN first invaded Bicol. Legazpi and the rest of the Albay province (and contiguous towns & provinces) only has one Tv channel that is GMA-7 in which the shows are shown one-week delayed. yes,one week delayed. It means, we can watch a That’s Entertainment episode a week after it was telecast in Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon provinces. Indeed, 1993 was just right in time when Dolphy’s hit TV sitcom “Home Along da Riles” became popular after debuting in 1991.

Home Along has been a part of my weekly Thursday routine – that me and my siblings and my aunts and other relatives would pile up in front of the TV just to watch the weekly dish of the show. That time, me and my siblings would eat early dinner so that we can proceed to our Aunt’s house nearby just to watch TV since we still do not have any TV set during that time. And we always have a great laugh.

1990 hit-TV sitcom Home Along da Riles aired on ABS-CBN for almost 15 years.

Dolphy is one of the very few Filipino comedians who can throw a punchline without laughing ahead of the comedy stint. His newspaper poking at the Sunog-Baga Boys and Babalu is a signature that every other comedian during that time, followed.

Dolphy thumbmarked and sealed the 90s as his prime decade in Philippine TV sitcom. i can say this since during the hit of John & Marsha, I was not born yet and that RPN-9’s coverage is not that extensive to the provinces. I only heard about John & Marsha when I was already on my early teens only in commentaries, reviews, tributes. memory-lane programs on TV,and even a re-run in the recent years.

A scene in Home Along da Riles (TV) with Claudine as Bing and Dolphy as Kevin Cosme with Gio Alvarez on the background.

The conglomerate of Cita Astals, Bernardo Bernardo, Roxanne (Dang Cruz), Nova Villa, Claudine Barretto, Gio Alvarez, Maybelline, Smokey Manoloto, Vandolph etc are also the ones I missed on Philippine TV comedy scen (well,of course, apart from my other favourite Abangan Ang Susunod na Kabanata).

The Philippines’ Comedy King during his heydays. A legend, indeed.

When I finished college in 2000, that started the dwindling of Home Along. I was barely watching the show. Maybe because I was already starting on my professional career and had been focusing on some other serious structures of my life. Until the day that Home Along bid farewell on TV.

And Dolphy contiued his TV and movie career. With some short-lived comedy programs and some hit movies. Until in 2010.

I would admit in 2004, I became less as a fan of Dolphy when he endorsed FPJ as his Presidential bet. Well, I knew Dolphy is an absolute vote-magnet. He can sway votes of millions of Filipinos with his charisma and character. I am also a fan of FPJ as an actor but I was never a fan of him to be a Philippine President.I was then rooting for the late great Senator Raul S. Roco.

In 2010, much more I was a little off with Dolphy when he endorsed MannyVillar for President. Again, I admit I was never an Erap supporter, but I deem, he should have endorsed Erap instead of Villar having the former as his good and long-time friend than the latter.

But all of those are history. Villar, Erap and Dolphy all have moved on.

When it was reported that Dolphy has been admitted to the ICU of Makati Medical Center last June, I felt an innate sadness. I think this man has made us happy and smile most of our lives – even our parents and grandparents. Dolphy gave us a sense of good laugh, hope, fantasy, imagination, genuine talent, the art of comedy and passion. This man who have been in the showbusiness for 6 decades has achieved something that no other can duplicate or even come close to it.

I continued to pray that this man, who, in his great splendor, is the absolute and indisputable King of Philippine Comedy, would recover from his ailments.

I was hoping for it, was praying for it. I though the positive developments the last 2 weeks would continue. But, sadly, last night I was stunned hearing the news that he is gone.

Que triste. Definitivamente, que triste la muerte de rey de comedia de peliculas Filipinas! I am very sad. Something in me has been lost – which I cannot explain nor expound. The closest encounter I had with Dolphy was when his motorcade for the FPJ campaign pass by our vehicle enroute to Tabaco City in 2004, but it is like Dolphy is already part of my subliminal system.

How in the world can I ever imagine Philippine show business without a Dolphy? Such a great loss.

The only thing left for us, fans, critics and observers is to respect, revere and try to move on with the death; and proceed with the inspiration and legacy he has left.

Goodbye, Dolphy!

Nota bene:

This is the author’s personal account of how he remembers and regards Dolphy during the course of his lifetime and does not in any way represent anybodyelse’s experiences, emotions or opinions. This is purely a personal account and recounting of how he recalls and experience the King of Comedy.

My take on Hayden Kho – Katrina Halili Sex Scandal Brouhaha

May 26, 2009

This is my very first blog….

I decided, after quite sometime, to create a blog in order for me to go with the tides of the contemporary times. I actually created blog accounts on other blog sites but such accounts has been litearlly dormant after I created it. Hence, this is my very very first blog posting…

The Hayden Kho sex candal, this is the best word to put it since Kho himself is the ‘lead role’ in the series of sex videos he himself took.

The main issue here is the videocapturing of the intimate moments between Kho and Halili, that:

1. Katrina might not know the lovemaking was videotaped, or;

2. Katrina might know the lovemaking was videotaped.

Whether or not, Ms. Halili knew that there was videocam on, no one has the right to publish or exhibit the intimate video between the two. Whether Ms. Halili agreed to videotaped the sex scence, it does not per se conveys that Ms Halili okayed with the exhibiting of it. Thus, she complains. She has the very right to complain.

With the Kho-Halili video, there were two versions. One is the non-sexual video (which is mainly the singing and dancing scene, both Kho and Halili in intimate apparels)[we refer this as KH Video#1] and the other one is the sex scene itself {we refer this as KH Video #2]. Notice that, the two videos are taken on a different date and/or with different camera:

a. KH Video #1 is a bit clearer than the KH Video #2. The latter is blurry and obscure. This only pertains that the two videos are taken with different cameras,  and most probably on a different dates.

b. KH Video #1, Ms. Halili was aware of the videocapture, since she herself was talking to the camera.

c. KH Video #2. Ms. Halili most probably is not aware of the videocapturing. It can be noted that this is most probably taken on a different date than the first video. Note that Kho was fixing the cam before Ms. Halili entered the scene, which Kho repeatedly go to and from the camera several times fixing the focus and angle.

On other videos, it was very evident that Kho secretly videotaped the sex scenes with other girls. Very evident are the videos with Maricar Reyes and the un-named teenage Brazilian model.

It has been reported that Hayden Kho has at least 40 sex videos compilation.

Then what can we say about Mr. Kho? Is this just a so-so? This is an act of voyeurism! A pervert.

The main issue here is the secretly videotaping sex scenes. Kho being the prey, the girls being the predator. This is a very typical example of voyeurism..similar to pedophilia and other sexual disorder.

The publication, uploading and tri-media posting of this video is another issue. Whether Kho or someone else was the cultprit, Kho is still culpable for all the violations. Kho was the one who did the videotaping.

Atty. Adel Tamano, if I am not mistken with the name, laywer of Dra. Vicki Belo, the ex-girlfriend (or girlfriend) of Mr. Kho says , in a Friday May 22, 10PM presscon, there is even a video of Kho-Belo lovemaking. This statement is very contoured and tailored. The fact Belo, as earlier mentioned by Kho as one of the only three persons having harddrive copies of all his (Kho’s) sex videos, apart from Eric Johnston Chua and another person, has been summoned as a possible culprit for the posting or distribution of the videos. This move is to clear Belo as the culpable person.

Belo has the very reason to release these videos. Belo might think that this is one way of getting back to Halili (and other girls) for dating (or sexing up) with her boyfriend Hayden Kho while they were still together. Johnston Chua also has probable reasons to release the videos in order as well to get back at Mr. Kho, being Kho’s former bestfriend. The third person is still quite obscure.

Belo telling the press that there would not have been any video if no one has dared to do it with somebody else’s boyfriend. Is this a right statement from a certified professional? A cosmetic surgeon indeed. Belo may have forgotten that, relationship or prohibited relationship or any type of relationship is consensual. It is a union of two minds, agreeing to a common thing. Halili may have been wrongm, but Kho is also definitely wrong. Belo’s statement only connotes that ‘Hey, it is Katrina’s fault dahil siya naman ang naglandi sa may girlfriend na tao’. Thence, Katrina deserve to be ditched into mud by these scandals.

What kind of judgment was that? That it is okay for Ms. Halili to be decried and humiliated in public just because she had a forbiden affair? The what about Kho? That it is okay for Kho since he is a male specie and that he had nothing to lose with all the video scandals? That in a chauvinist society and in a double standard community, a man has nothing to lose hence, can easily be forgiven?

One cannot rectify a wrongdoing with another one. One can never put into proper judgment for a wrongdoing with an erroneous verdict.

What is Vicki Belo thinking? Mr. Kho is a sick man. She is pushing herself to a sick man.

I couldn’t understand better, as well, the point of Hayden Kho’s mom, except that she is Hayden’s mother. but her public statement only puts her son into a deeper and filthier ditch. Mrs. Kho’s way of thinking and way of talking only shows where Hayden has come from with all his sickly attitude and very poor judgment. Let me put it in Filipino. Ang nanay pala ni Hayden Kho ay kunsintidora sa mga maling gawain ng anak. A very typical attitude of parents residing in shanties or depressed communties, or those mentally-challenged parents.

Let us say Katrina is the one feeding Hayden with ecstasy or drugs. How influential is an undergraduate young lady  at early 20s to sway a professional in his late 20s? And even if Katrina pushed Hayden to have drugs, the decision to be dope or not is still Hayden’s. It is a two-way thing.

But that allegation needs to be proven in proper forum. Ms. Halili is willing to submit to a drug test. if she is negative this will vindicate her.

Mrs. Kho’s stance is outrageous. She is also a woman, a daughter, a mother and a human being. In her desperate move to clear her son’s name, she bashed Ms. Halili thinking that would vindicate her sick son. does Mrs. Kho forgotten Katrina is also a female specie? Does Mrs. Kho forgotten that Ms. Halili also has a mother. She could have been more objective. But then again, she is Hayden Kho’s mom.

The main issue here is the voyeurism…more than 40 sex videos secretly taken. Videos taken  by the predator without the consent of the female preys.

And who do we think is the victim here? The coin only has two sides. There are only right and wrong. Nothing more.

What are we going to tell our kids about this? That it is okay to abuse women thorugh discreet videocapturing intimate lovescenes? and that it is okay to make sex ith just any girls? that it is okay to distrbiute secretly captured sex vidoes?that if one has been wrong in having an affair with a committed person (legal or not), such person deserved to be humiliated instead of forgiving the person andf teaching the same person of the rigth way of life?

Katrina Halili only flawed on her affair with Hayden Kho. she admitted it and she was sorry. She hurt Vicki Belo. Shen she admitted it, she already is paying the price of mass vindiction that she is not a role model-type of a lady. She was way too brave to saccept such. But does she deserved to be abused or being get back through the release of the sex videos?

And what about the other girls? some might have been taken way before the Kho-Belo relationship. DO they deserve this very humiliating scandal?

Hayden Kho, Vicki Belo, Mrs. Kho… there is only right and wrong in this world. If you wronged, you should apologize. And when you apologize, you do not justify the wrong doing.

There is nothing wrong with apologizing. As the scripture says “Mapalad ang mapagpakumbaba sapagkat sila’y kakasian ng Panginoon”.

My final words on this, and what I want for this case to end:

1. Wants Hayden Kho be stripped off his professional license as a cosmetic surgeon.

2. Wants Hayden Kho to be jailed.

3. Wants Vicki Belo to apologize to all the girls victimized by Kho. I want Belo to ditched Kho and move on with her lifel this would be best for her. There are lots of beautiful boys and men other than Hayden Kho.

4. Wants Hayden Kho’s mom to fee the remorse as well and apologize to the victims and their families.

5. Wants Maricar Reyes to come out as well, so that the issue would not be wrongly wasyed on Ms. Halili,  but on the general context of abuse of women.
